The teaching profession is a rewarding yet challenging field. Reflective supervision can be the key to sustaining a cherished career rather than confronting dissatisfaction, disengagement, and potential burnout. Teachers and leaders meet twice a term with a supervisor individually or in group settings. The supervisor creates a safe environment for reflecting on practice and fostering self-awareness. Unlike coaching, mentoring, and management, which are goal-oriented, reflective supervision is an ongoing relational process that encourages:
A professional alliance
Creativity
Intentional learning
Empowerment
Validation
Self-care
Critical thinking

Reflective supervision is a well established and valued form of support for mental health professionals. Nurses, psychologists, counsellors, social workers, and occupational therapists gain valuable insights into their professional practice through self-reflection, personal growth, and the development fostered by reflective supervision.
Where supervision was previously offered only during teacher training, there has been a growing recognition over the past decade of the need for ongoing reflective engagement in educational settings. Research indicates that reflective supervision is a more advanced and effective approach than coaching or monitoring. Reflective supervision is uniquely placed to provide an interactive, supportive, and reflective space focused on well-being and self-awareness.
Recent trials in NSW on reflective supervision for educational leaders underscore the importance of reflective supervision for principals. There is increasing evidence that
educators who receive supervision:
Increase reflective practice
Increase job satisfaction
Enhances professional growth
Reduce isolation
Improve self-care and the risk of burnout
Supports the transformational work required by contemporary educational leaders

Safe learning environments flourish when teachers and educational leaders observe their reactions to experiences with mindfulness. By cultivating reflective skills through supervision, educators can adapt their actions as they become aware rather than simply reactive.
-
Reflective practice invites teachers and leaders to examine perspectives, beliefs, judgments, emotional responses, and reactions. Supervision encourages big-picture thinking about decision-making and supports learning from experience. Educators who feel confident and connected can nurture safe interpersonal relationships with students, parents, staff, and colleagues. They become aware of internal dynamics and interactions between individuals and groups. Reflective practice is essential for leadership development and can assist teachers transition into leadership roles.

Teachers and leaders meet twice a term for an hour with a supervisor, either individually or in a group setting. The supervisor creates a safe environment for participants to reflect on their practice and develop self-understanding without fear of judgment or critique. Unlike coaching, mentoring, and management, which are goal-oriented, reflective supervision is an ongoing relational and reflexive process. Supervisors are external to the school context and do not report to management. The supervisor fosters:
A professional alliance
Creativity
Intentional learning
Empowerment
Validation
Self-care
Critical thinking

In the fast-paced and challenging environment of education, opportunities to pause and reflect are limited. Reflective supervision offers a unique strength-based approach that helps teams feel recognised and receive support. In this context, good work can be celebrated. Teachers and leaders will feel more supported and, as a result, will be betterequipped to draw on their own strengths while navigating the complex educational landscape.
Benefits of supervision can include:
Value of being in a relationship
An opportunity to connect and stay connected
An action-reflection model creates an opportunity to problem-solve among colleagues
Sharing contrasting perspectives is a way of getting to know each other as a team.

The Good Supervision Matters team has trained supervisors for over ten years and works with a carefully selected group of highly skilled and experienced professionals. A team member will meet with you to discuss your needs and assign two or three highly experienced supervisors to your school. One will provide one-on-one supervision for the principal and leaders, while the other will offer group supervision for teachers.
“Reflective supervision is seen as a more sophisticated and effective process than coaching and mentoring; it is much better suited to the nature of the transformational work required by contemporary educational leaders.”
- Mary Anne Hunter and Geoff Broughton, Professional Supervision for Principals, Cambridge University Press, 2024.
